Andy Mackinaw (Mark McKinney) was introduced in "B-12" after Ricky and Ron's departure (from the prior episode: "The Option Period") when Matt needed an extra writer's help. Andy was previously a writer on Studio 60 years before, while Matt and Danny were still there. Around two years prior to the episode's timeline, Andy's wife and daughter died in tragic circumstances in a car accident. It is revealed in a flashback scene in "K & R, Part I" that Matt never saw Andy smile until he walked into the writer's room in 2001 and announced his daughter's birth. At the time Matt hired him back, he was doing some experimental work in "a little theater in Pasadena" (as Matt puts it), an English-to-Dutch translation of John Osborne's 1956 play Look Back in Anger, presumably as an exercise. He ends up enjoying playing a mentor to Lucy and Darius, and agrees to stay on for another week.
